Lola the Green Aardvark and B'Femme have closed
Both the queer food bar Lola the Green Aardvark and the lesbian café B'Femme recently closed their doors. There's a possibility, however, that a successor for a similar clientele will open for both places.
Lola the Green Aardvark
The first to close on November 1 was the queer food bar Lola the Green Aardvark, located at Mauritskade 100A in Amsterdam East. Lola was opened in June 2020 by John and Bertie, who ran the popular restaurant-bar Getto on Warmoesstraat from 1996 to 2019. Like Getto, Lola became a place with a somewhat alternative character, featuring creative cocktails and a flower-filled terrace as a 'magical garden'.
Lola the Green Aardvark was always open to LGBTQ+-related activities. For example, the bimonthly Pink Oost neighborhood drink took place there, as did the weekly Queer Pub Quiz. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to keep the place open, and John and Bertie sold the café to retire.
Rumor has it that there is a possibility that the new owners will continue the place as a queer café, so stay tuned!
B'Femme
On November 11, the unexpected message came that café B'Femme had closed. This place opened in April 2023 in the left part of bar BLEND XL on Reguliersdwarsstraat. B'Femme was the first café specifically for lesbian, bisexual and queer women on this street and the third as such in Amsterdam, after café Saarein and bar Buka.
Despite the beautiful stained-glass interior with Amsterdam motifs and the enthusiastic management, B'Femme failed to attract enough visitors to become profitable. The number of lesbian places has always been considerably smaller than those for gay men, so apparently there was no market for a third women's café in the city.
It has been announced that a new concept will be coming to this location very soon, so stay tuned!
