Montmartre has moved to the western part of Reguliersdwarsstraat
Gay café Montmartre has reopened its doors at Reguliersdwarsstraat 48, after it was previously located at number 129 in the eastern part of the street.
The reopening of the Montmartre was festively celebrated on Friday, February 20, with a free vodka cocktail for all guests and free snacks from 18.00 to 20.00 hrs. Later, there were performances by Karen Mastique and DJ Ron.
This was the second relocation in a short time for Montmartre, after being located at Halvemaansteeg 17 for 40 years, from 1983 to 2023. There, the café was part of the large concentration of gay bars along the Amstel, which has now completely disappeared.
As one of the last of the Amstel bars, Montmartre closed its original location in December 2023. However, the place returned in September 2024 in the building of the former Surinamese-Antillean gay bar Reality in the eastern part of Reguliersdwarsstraat.
The old building of the Reality Bar was completely renovated and fitted with tiger-print wallpaper, baroque mirrors, and a ceiling filled with chandeliers of all sizes. However, all this did not guarantee a sustainable future for Montmartre at that location.
In the other part of Reguliersdwarsstraat, a solution presented itself when the space that had been home to the lesbian café B'Femme became available by the end of 2025. This space has been split off from the large gay bar BLEND XL, making the move beneficial for both owners.
Where Montmartre used to be in a remote corner, the place now benefits from the visitors of the other gay venues in this part of the street. However, the chandeliers have made way for disco balls, and the tiger-print wallpaper for a playful impression of the Parisian distict Montmartre.
Aside from that, gay café Montmartre remains a place where traditional Amsterdam atmosphere remains, with its signature Dutch sing-along music mixed with contemporary hits and classics from the '80s and '90s.
